the sky is falling
Tonight I realized I had ordered Takeout food
(forgive me, it was payday)
In the middle of a thunderstorm.
And Flash Flood Warning.
Which meant some poor soul —
Essentially me from twelve or fifteen years ago —
Would have to go out in it.
I called the store to the sound of thunder.
The confused girl behind the counter said yes, yes they were still taking deliveries.
I weep for our nation, I said.
It’s really OK to cancel my order, I said.
We’re getting a better car, she said.
And I waited for hot food on a wet night while the thunder subsided
And I listened as the rain overflowed my neighbors gutters.
The food came very quickly.
I hope I tipped enough.
